Letting creativity run free
Designed to spark the imaginations of people of all ages, the annual Macao International Children’s Arts Festival (MICAF) returns with a packed programme. Organised by the Cultural Affairs Bureau, this year’s festival presents live performances, creative camps, workshops and interactive events. MICAF, now in its third edition, also offers free weekend activities until the end of August including the Children’s Fun Book House – a pop-up bookshop at the Macao Cultural Centre – and a series of outdoor events at the Macao Cultural Centre Plaza featuring live performances, games, water play and art workshops.

A bug’s-eye view of Macao’s biodiversity
Macao’s lesser-known natural heritage is now on display through “Rediscovering Macao’s Wild: 135 New Insect Records – An Exhibition of the Entomological Legacy of Dr Emmett R. Easton in Macao”, which showcases more than 1,400 insect specimens collected by the late entomologist. The collection includes 135 species that were newly recorded in Macao’s insect checklist. Dr Easton played a pioneering role in documenting Macao’s insect fauna during his time at the University of Macau in the 1990s. He passed away in 2025 at the age of 87.

Table tennis royalty
Now a regular fixture on the international table tennis circuit, Macao is cementing its reputation as a leading destination for hosting major sporting events. Organised by the city’s Sports Bureau and World Table Tennis (WTT), and co-organised by the Macao Table Tennis General Association, WTT Champions Macao 2026 brings together many of the world’s highest-ranked men’s and women’s players, who will compete for a total prize fund of US$800,000. Past champions include China’s Wang Chuqin in the men’s event and Sun Yingsha (pictured) in the women’s event, with both players having won the Macao competition multiple times.

Celebrating Mio Pang Fei’s artistic legacy
Marking the 90th anniversary of late artist Mio Pang Fei’s birth, “East-West Contemplations: A Retrospective of Mio Pang Fei” brings together 90 paintings, mixed-media works, installations and manuscripts tracing the evolution of one of Macao’s pioneering contemporary artists. The exhibition highlights Mio Pang Fei’s concept of “Neo-Orientalism”, reflecting his artistic philosophy of “taking the spirit of Eastern culture as the essence with the use of Western modern languages”. Born in Shanghai, Mio Pang Fei lived and worked in Macao for decades before his death in 2020.

A city reframed
The Archives of Macao, under the Cultural Affairs Bureau, has played a vital role in collecting, restoring and preserving archival materials that chronicle the city’s history. A selection of its historical photographs is now on display at the “City in Rephotography” exhibition. The showcase adopts a comparative approach by presenting archival images alongside contemporary rephotographs taken from the same locations. By juxtaposing views from different eras, it traces the transformation of Macao’s streetscapes, everyday life and urban infrastructure, offering visitors a unique glimpse into how the city has evolved over time.

Inside the world of Mak Mak
Macao’s official tourism mascot, Mak Mak, has become a well-known ambassador for the city since its creation in 2018. The “Mak Mak Experience Hub” features four themed zones showcasing the mascot through a range of interactive displays and activities. The space also includes a selection of cultural and creative products inspired by Mak Mak herself. On weekends and designated public holidays, Mak Mak invites cafés and light-snack stalls to make surprise pop-up appearances, giving visitors a chance to experience the flavours of Macao in a colourful atmosphere.
